In this bulletin -

Board meeting minutes - June 13, 99

In attendence were Camaria, Nancy, David, Cheendana, and Somananda. David steered the meeting and Somananda took these notes.

An overnite field trip to Cape Split is planned for Saturday, August 14-15. People can hike out anytime during the day to the end of the split and a campfire meeting will be held on Little Split beach. For more info call Somananda at 538-8544.

The next General Meeting will be held October 3rd at Swallows Nest.

The NSPS brochure is being created by Cheendana (mission), Lois (committment), Joanna (artwork), and Somananda (layout, editing. printing). A rough copy will be ready for review for the August 14 Cape Split meeting.

NSPS branch chapter clarification - Each member of any branch chapter of NSPS needs to be a paid full member of NSPS and one person in that branch chapter needs to be on the NSPS board. The Halifax chapter has dissolved due to lack of interest.

Discussion occured about UPS being industry oriented and that we could benefit from more industry input into NSPS.

UPS Newsletter - We started with 50 and have 41 left as there are only 9 paid membeships so far in NSPS. We decided to keep some and distribute the rest to Great Ocean, EOS, Rising Sun, and the Museum of Natural History.

NSPS Newslatter - Cheendana, Joanna, and Somananda will work on it. A membership form needs to go in it.

Financial - $450 was taken in thru membership dues and donations. $35 was spent to register as an association with the province. There is $437.50 in the NSPS bank account. Half of the membership dues will be sent to UPS.

East Coast Gardener - article tabled til later.

Joanna's job is building a database of native wild plants, the rare and endangered ones first.

Ginny Proulx researched endangered plants in the UPS list and several sources of Nova Scotia plants and put together a list that Joanna will type up and pass on to Somananda for printing and posting on the NSPS website.

There was some discussion on the Irving arboretum at Acadia - seedbank as well. Letter to Irving?

Cheendana visited Pat Dix to see her collection of plant photos at her shop in Greenwich and thought it was great and could contribute to NSPS. Somananda will visit and possibly borrow photos to scan and post on the website.

Cheendana described her trip to Borealis Wild Flowers, a family run cottage industry near Antigonish. She said they have good quality plants and encouraged them to expand on their medicinal plants. An overnite fieldtrip there sometime is a good idea.

A UPS Newsletter will be sent to Ginny Proulx, Pat Dix, and Borealis.

David is working on a planting project with the Town of Wolfville that focuses on the Acadian period when they first built their dykes. Merit Gibson gave them a list of plants needed. We discussed the possibility of NSPS participating in the project - having a section or bed to plant and look after.

See you at Cape Split!
