BULLETIN No. 5 Dec 1, 2000
In this bulletin - Meeting coming up Jan 7, 2001 Dear Nova Scotia Plant Saver: How timely to be sitting down on this date, November 28, 2000. It was exactly two years ago that we had our formation meeting of Nova Scotia Plant Savers, November 28, 1998 at Swallows Nest. We got off to an excellent start and succeeded at accomplishing lots, including forming a board of directors, had several educational presentations and meetings, went on some interesting plant walks, began exploring Nova Scotia's medicinal plant heritage, as well as put together one newsletter and a website. And yes, fizzle out did happen, yet we have maintained a presence on the Internet and maintained our status as an association with the Province of Nova Scotia. Membership dues were not collected for the second year and therefore no one received a United Plant Savers Newsletter, which is full of inspiring plant related information. Hey there Plant Savers...
Personally, I have continued my interest in Plant Savers and did buy the slide show for my own use, which is also available for others to use. I have been putting a script together for slide show presentations, which has been a meticulous process, and I am learning lots. I have been approached to present the slide show to a few groups. In January there will be a talk arranged by Dannette Steele, an herbalist and activist for saving our forests from clear cutting. This Presentation will happen near the end of January in Halifax at Dalhousie University. The other invitation is from the Valley Gardeners for their February 12th meeting at the Kentville Research Station. They also have a conference the first weekend of May, which I hope we can present at. This shall be confirmed at a later date. I hope to gain my confidence in presenting this slide show and attract more people to get involved in our group. It would be beneficial to have more biologists, botanists, and foresters involved with us. I also hope to team up with others to do these presentations. Lois and I did a presentation this summer for a yoga retreat at Kidston Creek Farm. Personally, I am ready to make my involvement with NSPS a priority and hope that there will be others who will want to meet, perhaps monthly to fulfill tasks of organizing, research, and networking with other related groups. I hope this spring we can go and visit some plant sites. Near Windsor, bloodroot abounds and I know of a place on the North Mountain where Lady Slipper shows her bounty. I have also talked with a few people about getting public teaching gardens established this spring. Hopefully we can confirm some of these ideas or other ideas at our meeting in January. Rosemary Gladstar and a classmate from my herbal studies, Pam Hirsh, has put together a fine book called "Planting the Future" (ISBN 0-89281-894-8). A worthwhile investment for sure for learning more about the "At Risk" and "To Watch" medicinal plants. Also, check out www.plantsaver.org for more updated information about United Plant Savers. Well, on this 2nd year anniversary, I celebrate the green world that blesses us with beauty and medicines and hope that we can continue as a group to speak and act on behalf of these plants. Let's actively save our forests - the home of many precious plants. Lets replant our forests, and preserve our pockets of abundant heritage, and make sure that future generations have the opportunity to know these plants and their beauty. I would love to hear from you if you have any inspiration or questions. See you in January!!! In Green and Abundant Blessings, Cheendana (Lorie-Ann) 538-8544 |
